Had been looking for a wheel off trainer to replace my Kurt Control wheel on smart trainer. Narrowed the choice down to the Volt or the Elite XR but decided to take a chance on the Volt as Northern Bicycle offered a decent price and I preferred to buy locally in this case. For those that don't know Zwift is starting to sell the Volt rebranded under it's own name, the hardware is pretty much the same but with Zwifts own version of the firmware. Zwift will sell direct to consumer for $499.00 but not in Canada of course so Northern Bicycle's price as of Sept 2022 is one of the lower that I've seen Canada wide.
The trainer seems to be well made and very sturdy in use. I had read reports of the Android version of the app being difficult to use but connection and firmware update through the app was simple and quick, as was the connection to Rouvy. As with all bluetooth trainers you have to be aware of multiple bluetooth signals which can prevent the trainer from connecting to the app you want to use. I found it best to disable bluetooth on my computer while i was using the Volt app on my phone for updating and then disabling bluetooth on my phone when first connecting to Rouvy or any other ride simulator software on the computer.
In use the Volt is very quiet and smooth. Ride feel is much better than my wheel on trainer, transition from hill to flat to downhill is smooth and feels realistic. I can't speak to durability at this point but it feels rugged and will hopefully last a good few winters. I'll update the review if I find problems.
